Croton-On-Hudson, NY, Oct. 15, 2009 — The Croton-Harmon Education Foundation (CHEF) is sponsoring its second annual house tour on Saturday, October 24th 12-5. This year’s homes all share one thing in common – a great view! Among the five notable homes on the tour is the “Reservoir Viewfinder House.” Designed by Carlos M. Rodriguez, this contemporary single-family home was built in 1981. Its key feature is a wide, panoramic view that includes the Croton Dam, Croton Reservoir, and the protected forests surrounding it. Also on the tour is a home originally built in 1920 by the Briscoes. This home extended all the way to the Hudson River before Route 9 was created in the 1950’s. In 1963, Katheryn Fletcher, a socialite who liked to host parties and charitable events, became the second owner. She extended the property with the one-story addition as you can see today, adding terraces, a large circular driveway, lots of stone works and plantings around the property. The property was renovated one more time in 2008 to add modern and contemporary touches while restoring its original shape and architectural details.
Across town, on the Croton River is another home on the tour. This is a brand new home built to accommodate a number of functional as well as aesthetic priorities borne of “advancing age, experience and conscience.” The owners worked closely with architect Neil Carnow and builder Adam West to reflect these priorities. There are no steps to the main entrance, all the requirements of basic living on one floor, as much light as possible, plenty of wall space for art and photographs, and pleasant studio/workspace for the two artist owners. Of course the tour would not be complete without a Hudson River Home. This is an icon of 80’s architecture-simple and all about the view. Recently an addition was put on in the same style designed by architect Rob Luntz with builder Kevin Dymes. The fifth and final home remains a surprise. CHEF’s house tour is great for home and garden aficionados as well as all locals who want to get out and support the Croton-Harmon schools. All the homeowners will be onsite during the tour to answer questions. “Do not miss this opportunity to be fascinated and inspired by these five very unique Croton homes,” said Demetra Restuccia, Co-Chair of the event.
If you have a program idea for the Croton-Harmon Schools – please share it with CHEF. Applications can be filled out by students, teachers or parents. The next grant cycle will occur in November. The Croton-Harmon Education Foundation is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Through the generous support of the Croton community, CHEF has awarded grants of more than $480,000 for a variety of initiatives, many of which give students unique educational experiences that go beyond the scope of traditional classroom learning.
